Franck earns honors

Nicholas Franck Nicholas Franck Nicholas J. Franck, a senior at The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications, located in PhoenixAriz., placed third nationally in the William Hearst Journalism Awards in the Radio News competition and received a $1,500 reward.

Franck will be flown to San Francisco in June of 2013 to participate in a national competition between the top five Hearst recipients from around the country.

Each participant will be required to produce a news story and then will be judged on the content and professionalism of the piece.

Monetary awards will be given ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.

Franck has also been selected to receive a Region 11 Mark of Excellence Award in the Radio Sports Reporting category. Franck has been a part of the sports department at The Blaze 1330 AM radio station for the past four years and has taken the role of sports director this year. He is also a sports anchor and reporter on Cronkite NewsWatch, a television program that airs on the local PBS station Monday through Thursday.

The award was presented during the Region 11 Spring Conference. The conference was held April 12-13 at the South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.

Franck will be graduating in May from The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and from Arizona State’s College of Liberal Arts with a degree in Political Science.

Nick is the son of Bill and Mona Franck of Casselton and the grandson of Joe and Helen Franck of Hague and the late Joe and Helen Krumm, who were Hague residents.
