JD’s Deli and More opens, Linton
Ohlhauser and Alderin recently opened JD’s Deli and More, formerly the Lion’s Den, in Linton.
Alderin was a weekly customer of the Lion’s Den, and when she learned that they were closing, she called her mom, hoping she would agree this would be a great opportunity for both of them. Mom agreed, they negotiated a deal and opened for business on Mon., Jan. 14, 2013.
“I knew this was always something I wanted to do,” Alderin said. “I love so much about managing my own restaurant business, and I love to cook, waitress and visit with customers.”
For her mom, it was good timing as she had accepted an early-out severance package from Aetna where she was employed for the past 13 years. The severance package was for a year, and that year expires in February.
“My daughter called me and suggested it was time I get back to work,” Ohlhauser said.
Ohlhauser has a few years of experience in the restaurant business. She managed the Mouse River Park Cafe in Mohall from 1988 to 1992. From 1993 to 1995, after moving to Bismarck, she was a manager at Kentucky Fried Chicken, Subway and Dakota Farms. She then worked as a customer service representative at Sykes until 1999, and for Aetna for 13 years from 1999 to 2012.
Alderin also has a back- ground in the food service and restaurant business. She worked in the dietary department at St. Alexius Medical Center, was a head cook at the Royal Fork, cooked for ECLC Day Care at their three locations and was a waitress at Kist Livestock.
After selling their home in Mandan, the Alderin family moved to the same farm where her mother and stepfather reside, 12 miles west of Linton.
“We wanted to leave the Bismarck-Mandan area as the city was getting too big,” Alderin said.
Alderin’s husband, Ryan Alderin, works as a driller on oil rigs near Keene. They have a 10-year old daughter, Jade, and a 7-year old son, Noah.
Alderin said the kids love Linton, attending school at Linton Public School, and also enjoy living on the farm.
Ohlhauser and her husband, Ed Ohlhauser, purchased the family farm nine years ago. The farmstead was once owned by Ed’s parents, Martin and Leona Ohlhauser. Ed continues to work in Bismarck at Butler Machinery.
JD’s Deli and More will continue to have many of the items that were on the Lion’s Den menu. They are serving homemade food items, and purchasing hamburger from the local meat market and buns from the local bakery. With their newly purchased hot air oven, they are able to bake several products which in the past required deep fat frying.
“We have all kinds of homemade soups that are delicious,” Ohlhauser and Alderin said. “We are always looking for ways to serve our customers the best, so we appreciate any ideas they can give us.”
They offer daily specials and already know that Taco Tuesday has been a big hit. By summer, they plan to place picnic tables out back and in front of the deli.
JD’s Deli is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weekend hours will be announced at a later date.
