Lady Clippers upend South Border for first district win

Strasburg-Zeeland picked up its first District 6 victory of the season with a 62-37 win over South Border in Zeeland on Jan. 15. The Lady Clippers improved to 4-3 on the season, while evening their record at 1-1 in District 6. South Border dropped to 0-1 in the district and 3-5 overall with the loss.

Strasburg-Zeeland turned in its best shooting performance coinciding with its highest point total of the year so far, and Lady Clippers got off to a good start and kept the pressure on the entire game. Brittany Moser canned a pair of three-pointers and scored 8 points in the opening quarter to help Strasburg-Zeeland build a 14-8 advantage, and six Lady Clippers got in the scoring column to lead a 19-6 run during the second period that increased the lead to 33- 14 at the break. Moser scored 10 points, while Courtney Bubach and Brooke Scherr netted 6 points apiece for Strasburg-Zeeland in the first half.

The Lady Clippers started slowly in the second half, but they were able to add to their lead (43-22) by the end of the third period, and then they coasted through the final quarter to pull away.

Strasburg-Zeeland shot a sizzling, 63 percent (25 of 40) from the field, including a 7 of 13 showing from behind the arc. The Lady Clippers hit just 5 of 15 (33%) free throws, but they held a 33-22 advantage in rebounds. South Border hit on just 14 of 54 (26%) field goal attempts, including just 3 of 13 (23%) three-point attempts, and the Lady Mustangs connected on just 6 of 16 (38%) free throws in the game.

Moser hit four 3-pointers and led Strasburg-Zeeland with 18 points and 6 assists, while Bubach netted 11 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Ali Wolf (8 rebounds, 5 assists) and Kara Weigel (4 rebounds) scored 8 points each, and Suzanne Ternes chipped in 5 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals for the Lady Clippers. Kalli Scherbenske scored a game-high 24 points for South Border, but no other player scored more than 4 points for the Lady Mustangs.
